Project Rallycross WRX : Introduction

Aug 27, 2003

by: Jacoby O'Connor

With all the hype surrounding the WRX in 2002, it's rare to find any car-conscious individual who isn't aware of the newly remodeled and powered compact. Needless to say, I was so excited about this new version of an already great line that I became obsessed with owning one for myself, much like a child wanting that shiny new bike, which actually has two hand brakes. It wasn’t long before I placed my order.

I kept my wish list simple and soon received my WRBlue sedan. The car was delivered with the standard Momo steering wheel and 6-disc CD changer/cassette stereo. The drilled aluminum pedals were a nice touch as well. The black cloth seats are nicely bolstered and will be much appreciated during spirited driving. The only optional items I added were the security system and the rear spoiler.

I soon ventured out to my first rally-cross event, and this brings me to my goals for this project. As this car is both my daily driver and my rally-cross car, it needs to be suitable for street driving, with tires and suspension to match, as well as possess the protective and performance features that the rally-cross course demands.

Over the next several months this project will undergo enhancements ranging from protection issues, such as skid plates and mud flaps, to suspension and exhaust modifications. The end result will be a car suitable for rally-cross, while also able to handle its duties as a daily driver.

Here is the list of projects we currently have planned.

Part I – Wheels and Tires
Part II –Rally-Cross Protection
Part III – Engine and Exhaust
Part IV – Suspension
Part V – Aesthetics
Part VI – Brakes

This list is subject to change given seasonal needs, release of significant new products, or modifications available for the car.
